Educational Training for Healthcare Professionals Launched in the Frontline Town of Okhtyrka
The first training sessions for healthcare professionals took place at Okhtyrka Central District Hospital as part of an eight-month program aimed at strengthening the region’s healthcare system. The training brought together 72 participants — the largest number of medical workers to take part simultaneously in ZDOROVI educational events in this area.
Over six hours of intensive work, participants completed three key modules, ranging from barrier-free interaction with patients to conflict management and communication with people who have experienced trauma. The final stage was a continuing professional development (CPD) assessment, allowing participants to integrate their knowledge into practice.
These trainings are part of a broader program that includes 21 in-person sessions for approximately 300 healthcare professionals in the Sumy region of Ukraine.
“Medical professionals arrive exhausted — but ready to work”
According to the project’s trainers, Tetiana Kuzmenko and Iryna Pashkevych, working in a border region places a particular strain on healthcare workers.
“Medical professionals arrive at training sessions in various states. Often, they are tired and showing signs of burnout. At the same time, they remain highly engaged. They don’t just listen — they relate the material to situations from their own experience and actively participate in discussions,” the trainers note.
They emphasize that the main value of such training lies in the opportunity to work through familiar, real-life situations: difficult conversations with patients, conflicts, and communication with veterans or people who have experienced loss.
“We discuss how to maintain the quality of patient interaction in real-life conditions — under pressure and stress. Healthcare professionals truly resonate with this,” they add.
A distinct benefit of the training is the environment it creates — one in which healthcare professionals can openly discuss their well-being. Despite their fatigue, participants actively engaged in discussions, shared experiences, and worked together to find solutions. According to the trainers, this “active participation” is a clear indicator of the system’s genuine need for such knowledge.
The Sumy region is the area where the healthcare system operates under constant strain and security risks. Here, doctors face not only physical illnesses but also the daily consequences of war, including PTSD, anxiety disorders, and emotional exhaustion among patients.
That is why the program focuses on practical skills that directly impact the quality of medical care: effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to work under conditions of chronic stress.
The project “Strengthening the Capacity of Healthcare Workers in the Sumy Region to Support Recovery and Reintegration of the Population” is being implemented by the ZDOROVI Charitable Foundation as part of the “Capable and Resistant: Sumy” project, implemented by East Europe Foundation (EEF).
