Comprehensive Eight-Month Medical Training Program Launches in Sumy Region
The ZDOROVI Charitable Foundation is launching a comprehensive educational project in the Sumy region aimed at addressing one of the key challenges this border area faces: how the healthcare system can respond to the consequences of war, not only physical, but also psychological and social.
The initiative, «Strengthening the Capacity of Healthcare Workers in the Sumy Region to Support Recovery and Reintegration of the Population», will cover five communities: Sumy, Krolevets, Shostka, Romny, and Okhtyrka. Over the course of eight months, 21 offline training sessions will be held for approximately 300 medical professionals – primary care physicians, nurses, and healthcare facility managers.
The program provides practical training for working in the realities of war. In a region that is regularly shelled, medical professionals are increasingly treating patients with PTSD, complex psycho-emotional conditions, and traumatic experiences related to combat or forced displacement. At the same time, healthcare institutions often lack the tools needed to ensure barrier-free services and effective communication with veterans.
The program focuses on three key areas:
1) ensuring barrier-free access in medical facilities – from physical accessibility to service culture;
2) conflict management in high-stress environments;
3) effective communication with veterans and individuals who have experienced trauma.
The training is based on ZDOROVI’s courses, which have already been completed by more than 30,000 healthcare professionals across Ukraine. The format includes analyzing real cases from medical practice during wartime and developing clear, practical algorithms for action.
The project is being implemented in cooperation with the regional military administration, local authorities, and the executives of healthcare facilities. After the training is completed, the team will conduct a survey to document changes and prepare recommendations for further implementation of barrier-free principles in the communities.
The initiators emphasize that the project’s long-term goal is to create a new standard of medical environment – one that is sustainable, inclusive, and prepared to address the challenges of post-war recovery.
The project «Strengthening the Capacity of Healthcare Workers in the Sumy Region to Support Recovery and Reintegration of the Population» is being implemented by the ZDOROVI Charitable Foundation as part of the «Capable and Resistant: Sumy» project, implemented by East Europe Foundation.
